The University of Pennsylvania’s 25-year-old Summer Undergraduate Mentored Research (SUMR) program has won AcademyHealth’s 2025 Mosaic Award for its work and commitment to creating a more representative and welcoming experience for undergraduates interested in joining the health services research (HSR) community.

“This is such a great honor for our program and the many dozens of faculty members who annually donate so much of their time and effort to mentoring the scholars in ways that change many of their lives and bring a wider perspective to health care research,” said Joanne Levy, MBA, MPC, Founding Director of the SUMR program and LDI Director of LDI Student Initiatives.

A joint program of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (LDI) and the Wharton School’s Health Care Management Department, SUMR helps to advance health equity and channel undergraduates toward advanced HSR degrees and careers in health care. It annually recruits about several dozen young scholars for a summer-long curriculum that pairs each with top faculty researchers and immerses the cohort in the daily life and work of Penn’s broad, multidisciplinary community of HSR researchers.

“We are so grateful to see this important program recognized like this,” said LDI Executive Director Rachel M. Werner, MD, PhD. “SUMR has long embodied the values of LDI and of AcademyHealth, cultivating and supporting the bright young stars who will be the future of health policy and health services researchers. Its impact on students, research, and the broader health policy community has been both profound and measurable, and we are all proud to have been a part of that.”

The award will be presented at the June 9 awards session of the AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. All 33 members of this year’s SUMR scholar cohort will be in attendance.
