Jonathan Lorenzo

University of Pennsylvania, Class of 2019

Major: Mathematical Economics

Minor: American Public Policy

Jonathan Delgadillo Lorenzo (Jon) graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied Mathematical Economics in the College of Arts and Sciences. He is currently working as a Data Science Associate at Theta Equity Partners.

Jon’s research interest in health inequities came from his immigrant, low-income upbringing in inner-city Los Angeles. He was socialized to believe he shouldn’t visit the doctor unless he was physically sick enough to miss school. A doctors’ visit would cost his mom a full day of pay his family could not afford. He was also taught to distrust doctor prescriptions as his mom worried about unnecessary medications and treatments.

Through SUMR, Lorenzo worked with Drs. Ashley Swanson and Matthew Grennan on various research projects, including conflicts of interest between physicians and firms in pharmaceutical and medical device markets, increasing market power effect of physician-hospital integration on physician prices, and aligning incentives for physicians and hospitals post-integration. He also worked with Dr. Juan Pablo Atal, PhD on two projects that studied inequality in access to health care globally, and the costs and benefits of public insurance coverage for private emergency room facilities.

Outside of research, Lorenzo is extremely passionate about exploring his indigenous Zapotec background through performing at cultural events with the trumpet, eating traditional food, and studying his family’s history. He also loves to follow politics through independent media, and to play video games online with his two younger brothers.
