Joshua M. Liao, MD, MSc is a board-certified internal medicine physician and Associate Professor in the University of Washington (UW) Schools of Medicine and Public Health. He is also the Medical Director of Payment Strategy at UW Medicine and directs the Value and Systems Science Lab in the UW School of Medicine. He trained at Brigham & Women’s Hospital where he was also a Clinical Fellow in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Liao received his health policy and health services training at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Liao’s research focuses on two related areas: policy initiatives that reform health care payment and delivery, and provider initiatives that use principles from behavioral science to drive performance in those reforms. He combines this research with complementary policy experiences through which he advises policymakers on payment and related delivery issues: he serves on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Physician-Focused Payment Model Technical Advisory Committee (PTAC), as well as an advisor to the national RVU Update Committee (RUC).
