Kaustav Shah, MD is an internist at the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia and a fellow in the National Clinician Scholars Program (NCSP) at the University of Pennsylvania. During his NCSP fellowship, he is interested in studying how health care professionals interact with electronic health records. He aims to investigate how emerging informatics tools powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning can be leveraged to drive quality improvement while also promoting physician and nurse wellness. He also plans to develop pathways that ensure these tools are developed with diverse patient data and that they do not propagate existing biases or inequities.
Originally from central New Jersey, Dr. Shah earned his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University. He then worked in management consulting prior to obtaining his MD degree at Vanderbilt University. He moved across the country to California to complete his internal medicine residency at UCLA before returning closer to home for the NCSP program. His work has been presented at national meetings and cited in local, national and international journals.
