Joshua Liao, MD, MSc is an internal medicine physician and Division Chief of General Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he is a Professor with Tenure and the Walter Family Distinguished Chair in Internal Medicine in Honor of Albert D. Roberts, MD. He leads the Program on Policy Evaluation and Learning at UT Southwestern, where he is also faculty at the O’Donnell School of Public Health.
Prior to UT Southwestern, Dr. Liao was faculty in the Schools of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Washington, where he served the Associate Chair for Health Systems in the Department of Medicine and enterprise Medical Director of Payment Strategy at UW Medicine. In Washington, Dr. Liao founded and led a nationally recognized policy evaluation unit that became the formal evaluation partner for the Washington Health Care Authority, the largest purchaser of health care services in state.
Dr. Liao has committed his career to improving health care payment and delivery. His experience includes serving on a federal committee to advise the Secretary of the US Department of Health & Human Services on payment models; advising state Medicaid programs on a variety of payment and delivery issues; serving on national committees and advisory groups for the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Family Physicians; and serving as an advisor to the RVU Update Committee.
He trained at Brigham & Women’s Hospital where he was also a Clinical Fellow in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Liao received his health policy and health services training at the University of Pennsylvania.
