Emily Vail, MD, MSc is an Assistant Professor in Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Perelman School of Medicine. Dr. Vail is a physician-scientist dedicated to understanding health care delivery in the perioperative period. Her research uses clinical and administrative datasets to identify opportunities to improve patient outcomes. Dr. Vail’s current research program examines the U.S. organ donation system, focusing on the effects of centralized management of deceased organ donors on donation and transplantation outcomes. She is a member of the Columbia University Virginia Apgar Society and is the Co-Director of the Penn Center for Perioperative Outcomes Research and Transformation (CPORT). Dr. Vail received her MD degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. She completed an anesthesia residency and critical care fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital at Columbia. After clinical training, she completed an Apgar research fellowship at Columbia University and earned an MS in Patient-Oriented Research from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. A board-certified anesthesiologist and intensivist, Dr. Vail joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 2020.
